Spirit of Life

August 24, 2011

Sorry about my somewhat obtuse last post. I'm fine, really!

Basically, I didn't want to discuss what happened without talking about the background, and the background is complicated. It's to do with spirituality which is not an easy topic to discuss, especially not in the essentially one-sided medium of a blog.

Also, it's such a personal thing that I feel rather exposed talking about it on the internet. It's not something I want any old random person knowing about me.

Last night, I was trying to explain to Mattgreen about how when I first got my iPod, I hated people looking at it. I didn't want to be judged based on my musical tastes, because I'd only put a few dozen albums on there and they weren't truly representative of the stuff I like listening to. Now my whole music collection is on there, I don't care what anybody thinks any more, because at least it's a true reflection of my musical tastes.

Belief in anything spiritual is similar. I don't want people thinking I've turned into a God-botherer or a barefooted Buddhist hippie, I don't want to deal with other people's opinions about what it means if I attend a mosque, I don't want to be judged for wanting to go on a pilgrimage.

None of the above are true but if they were, let's face it, it would change your opinion of me. And that's why I don't want to talk about it.

I will now disappear up my own arse in a puff of smoke.

Vinyl

August 22, 2011

I've spent most of this evening getting all my old vinyl records out of their sleeves and looking at them. They still smell the way records always do, sort of dusty, and they still look all sleek and shiny and it still feels kind of magical to pull them out of their sleeves. They still sound gritty and raw and like REAL MUSIC. Unfortunately I haven't owned a record player in about ten years so I had to imagine the last part.

Then I put them all on Ebay. Sigh.

It feels incredibly sad, but I've been hulking those records around for twenty years and I know I'm never going to play them again. It's like I'm disposing of a chunk of my teenage years and part of me doesn't want to let go, but I know I have to do it. Our house is full of STUFF and some of it has just GOT TO GO.

Talking of feeling sad, yesterday I had a really weird experience. I haven't talked about it to anyone but I'm still thinking about it. I don't know whether to write about it here, because it's kind of personal. I want to document it somewhere though, because it might help me make sense of it. Weird. It's been a funny couple of days.

Mattgreen's amusing foibles, episode 743859743.

One of Mattgreen's many endearing habits is to change the names of household items to make them sound more macho. For example, when he got some random espadrilles from TK Maxx, and I laughingly called them his sandals, he insisted that no, these were not sandals:

These, my friends, are MANdles. The name has stuck and become a normal noun in our house, e.g. "Where are your mandles?" or "Can I borrow your mandles?"

On another occasion, I'd made some florentines at Christmas and I had fucked them up. I'd rushed the recipe and forgotten some vital ingredient, I think it was flour. When I tried to put them on the baking tray they were all sloppy and wet and I announced them ruined. I was just about to throw the whole lot in the bin when Mattgreen stepped in. He scraped all the goo back into the bowl, added the flour, washed up and re-greased the baking tray and put them in the oven. Amazingly it did actually work and when they came out, I said, "Oh look! Your florentines look really good!" and Mattgreen said, "Those aren't florentines. They're MANentines".

This weekend, I went to the local hardware shop to get Matt some waterproof gloves to use to grout the patio. They suggested getting heavy duty rubber gloves. I got back and gave them to Mattgreen dubiously. "I hope Marigolds aren't too feminine for you," I said. He ripped them open. They were black. "These are MEN's marigolds," said Mattgreen, "MANigolds". Of course.
