Insomnia

July 25, 2009

Lately I've been having problems with insomnia. Normally I don't have any trouble sleeping, but I think the combination of stress at work + moving house has brought it on. (Yes - we're moving again - for the seventh time in seven years, if anyone is still counting).

My solutions so far include:
Obviously once I do these things I can't get back to sleep, so then I have to function all day feeling exhausted. But going back to bed is pointless because nine times out of ten I can't get back to sleep anyway, so I figure I may as well do something useful.

If you have any suggestions for things I can do in the middle of the night, please post them in the comments :)

Comments:
When my husband wakes up in the middle of the night, he lays on the couch, watching DVD commentary tracks until he falls asleep. He tends to wake up at 7 every day naturally, so the lack of proximity to an alarm clock isn't an issue.

That might work, actually. Someone else suggested watching BBC News 24 which might also work, as might counting backwards, drinking milky drinks etc.

Except part of me (a very stupid part) thinks "WOAH! HARDCORE!! I'm up at 4am with the COOL KIDS!" and doesn't actually want to go back to bed. I think this may explain the presence of caffeine and getting up in my insomnia 'remedies'...

I wish I didn't need an alarm clock. I have one which goes BEEP BEEP BEEP with radio static in the background which goes off every nine minutes and I still don't hear it :) It drives my husband bloody insane.

Have you been working out?

It relieves the stress and helps you sleep.
